Last week was the pits. I was recovering from falling on ice and busting my ribs, and had one wicked cold. You could probably tell that I'm a bit better today because I'm wearing makeup and a skirt to the office.

Yesterday, I spent the day with my family. Helping move, feed horses at the ranch, playing with my baby niece and some new barn kittens. It was some well needed therapy. I plan to uphold my resolutions and be back here more often this week!

Has it really been over a month since I've posted here? Does it even matter? Lately, I found that it does. How about sharing my new years resolutions with you so I can be held accountable.

- Compliment people more. (Too often I leave a place and think, "I wish I had told them how great that jacket was" or even "You, stranger, have a superb smile." When I'm complimented it tends to make my day, I need to work on returning that favor.

- Work on learning to love.

- Save money.

- Blog more.

- Give Paper Schmaper a facelift all around.

- Create more.

- Get out the Happy Book more.

- Keep better contact. (i.e. stop falling off the face of the earth)

- Listen more.

- Walk even more.

- Go on vacation.

Do you make resolutions? Do you keep them? What are they?

I went to see Billy Elliot last night. That movie has been one of my favorites of the decade, and the musical does not disappoint. The talent of the 13 year old who plays Billy is jaw-dropping, and I had the most fun watching him.

The angry dance scene was well done, but I really wanted it to be more like the scene from the movie... So, here's some pure awesomeness before your weekend begins. Put on your dancin' shoes! (the dance starts 1 minute in)

Stand In For Home is one of my favorites from the Come Up To My Room 2011 show. Amanda McCavour uses her sewing machine to create her drawings. "She is interested in the vulnerability of thread, its ability to unravel, and its strength when it is sewn together."

I couldn't agree with her more.

I recently made a poster for my boss because he really needs to practice this mantra, and thought the typography would make a perfect card.

Been a little while since I've done a paper wednesday, hasn't it?! How about we get back into the groove with paper inspired perfumes? I'm in the need of a new scent. How can you choose based on description alone?

Demeter's Paperback
"A dusty old copy of a Barbara Pym novel did it for us. This Demeter scent is sweet and just a touch musty, a lot like Pym's world come to think of it. Read her if you haven't. Her writing is wonderful, if slightly musty, English satire from the 60s and 70s."

Anyone who knows me knows I'm not only obsessed with paper but with print in general. Today is the first day of SGCI being hosted here in St. Louis and I'm really looking forward to all the events Friday night on Cherokee Street. The SGCI Conference is such a great thing to be hosted here because it's goal is to increase public appreciation of printmaking and book arts. St. Louis has such an amazing artist community that I'm proud to be a part of. If you are in the area, I hope to see you there.

Let's Talk About Time

I've been thinking a lot about time lately. A new baby in the family, my Nana's 89th birthday, springing forward, and a hectic life have been bringing this to mind. I feel like I don't have the time to do the things I want to do, and the things I have to do must be fun or I won't even bother doing them. The Cult Of Busy by Scott Berkun is giving me a new perspective.

"Time is the singular measure of life. It’s one of the few things you can not get more of. Knowing how to spend it well is possibly the most important skill you can have.

The person who gets a job done in one hour will seem less busy than the guy who can only do it in five. How busy a person seems is not necessarily indicative of the quality of their results. Someone who is better at something might very well seem less busy, because they are more effective. Results matter more than the time spent to achieve them.

Being in demand can have good and bad causes. Someone with a line of people waiting to talk to them outside their office door at work seems busy, and therefore seems important. But somehow the clerk running the slowest supermarket checkout line in the universe isn’t praised in the same way; it means they’re ineffective. People who are at the center of everything aren’t necessarily good at what they do (although they might be). The bar of being busy falls far well below the bar of being good.

The compulsion to save time may lead nowhere. If you’re always cutting corners to save time, when exactly are you using the time you’ve saved? There is this illusion some day in the future you get back all the time you’ve squirreled away in one big chunk. I don’t think time works this way. For most Americans it seems most of our time savings goes straight into watching television. That’s where all the time savings we think we get actually goes.

The phrase “I don’t have time for” should never be said. We all get the same amount of time every day. If you can’t do something it’s not about the quantity of time. It’s really about how important the task is to you. I’m sure if you were having a heart attack, you’d magically find time to go to the hospital. That time would come from something else you’d planned to do, but now seems less important. This is how time works all the time. What people really mean when they say “I don’t have time” is this thing is not important enough to earn my time. It’s a polite way to tell people they’re not worth your time."

My dream bedroom looks like this. So what if I'm an adult?

The etsy shop supply is dwindling. With design projects piling up, I haven't had much time to get down and dirty with Miss Pearl. I got a new base and replenished my paper supply, so that's a start. There's a coaster on the horizon I look forward to printing.

Last night I got my first flywheel back and introduced the 2 pearls. It was a very happy moment in the pressroom. It's strange to have a connection with a piece of cast iron.

Before my coffee this am, I almost hit a truck without realizing my foot wasn't pressing the brake hard enough, curbed my beloved Jetta, then proceeded to DROP my hubby's coffee down the stairs. I'm currently enjoying my beverage before I try to accomplish anything else!

I'll do some yoga, catch up on blogs, write my pen pals, knit a bit, order letterpress supplies and read my *new books. Did I mention how much I love my Fridays off?

Also, I'm looking forward to the SGC International Conference next month in St. Louis.

Girls Who Read

"Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag.She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads."

I was bragging about wearing flip flops last week and now I'm paying for it. Freezing rain overnight has now cursed me with a not so fun drive in to work today. A 26 car pile up and accidents all over made it quite scary, so I needed something extra pretty to look at.

This display by Kyle Bean is perfection. I love the people and the contrast of the dark woods against the gold building.

Now, I can start my day a little better! Hopefully everyone is okay.

Our best friends are having a carnival themed wedding this year and I am blessed with creative license on their invitation suite. We decided the save the date should be a carnival announcement poster to set the tone of the wedding. Their engagement photo stamps made for the perfect accompaniment. A Few Details

As mentioned earlier this week- I promised a few photos of the shower details. The invites matched the nursery bedding set and opened like a barn door. They were sent in a box that was loaded with pink circus peanuts. "Peanut" is the baby's name until they can decide on one- so we played off that. The cake was made by my talented bestie Lindsay, and my mom and I made the pom poms. There were some really cute paper circle garlands that my mom sewed, but for some reason I didn't get a photo. Her thank you notes were letterpressed in a dusty pink by yours truly.

Not Going To Lie

I'm not digging the Twitter thing so much. I really only joined so I could have a Pinterest account, which I love! I'll work on the tweeting, but I don't see it lasting. It is nice to get local updates from my favorite restaurants and STL spots though.

This weekend we got mexican takeout and watched The Social Network, had breffie with friends, dinner with friends, and my sister's farm-themed baby shower. It was fun! Pics of the shower will be coming- we had some really cute details in there and my sister had a wonderful time.

I don't know why, but I dislike the entire act of social networking. Seems a bit ridiculous since I'm a blogger, right? I guess I have the attitude that if I'm not friends with you in real life, why do we need to be friends on Facebook? I don't have facebook and frankly I wish it would go away... Twitter seems like a good idea, but might make the e-clutter problem I already have- even worse. I'm trying it out now - @paperschmaper

I welcome your thoughts on the subject. Do you like facebook more? Should I stop being a dinosaur and just do it already?

Sorry for my lack of posting- the last week was a bit out of control. Busy work, busy home, Mr. Schmaper had a wicked case of the stomach bug, and so on... We did make it on a date we've been trying to do. Brunch and a tour at our local Schlafly Bottleworks. We're big fans of Schlafly and always have one of their beers on tap in our basement to go along with the homebrew. Luckily, things have slowed down and everyone is feeling 100%.

Julia had a few questions she passed on to me, and since I don't get personal here too often I'll answer them:

1. why did you create the blog?
As a virtual inspiration folder and to meet others who had an interest in design and print. Who knew I'd make so many friends?!

2. what kind of blogs do you follow?
There's a hodgepodge of awesome feeds in my 200 subscriptions.

3. favorite makeup brand?
I don't really have a favorite.

4. favorite clothing brand?
ModCloth is like crack to me.

5. your indispensable makeup product?
I keep trying to distance myself from it, but always come back. Chanel Inimitable mascara- there's nothing like it!

6. your favorite colour?
gray

7. your perfume?
high tea from royal apothic. (shhh... it's a room spray, but it's so fantastic I spray it on me!)

8. your favorite film?
Yeah, i love movies so that's not a fair question. I guess the favorite for today would be "The Kids Are All Right"

9. what country would you like to visit and why?
Ireland or Iceland for the beauty.

10. make-up the last question and answer it yourself: ...really???
"not really."

2010 Holiday Homebrew

It's complete, bottled, carbonated and tastes great. I think it just might be the best brew made in the kitchen yet! Using the big bottles really takes down the quantity, but it sure makes a nice gift. We ended up with 20 bottles this year.

Letterpressing the labels was something new for me. Normally, I print directly to the gum-backed paper. This year I put adhesive on the back of 100% cotton paper after printing on a laser printer, then letterpressed last. Here are some other holiday labels we've done in years past.

Labeling the holiday brew signifies the last real chore we do to prepare for the holidays. It sure feels nice to be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the week now.
